Pastel is an increasingly sought after medium for its beauty, vibrancy, durability and endless possibilities for technique and style. Whether you’re a beginner who wants to explore this medium, or an experienced pastelist who wants a fresh perspective, this step by step workshop is for you.
We will play with techniques and colorations in pastel painting during this one day workshop. You will:
- Sample various types of dry pastels to create brilliant color and rich value
- Experience different papers and the effects they produce
- Experiment with an underpainting
- Practice applying color strokes and blending techniques unique to this medium
- Create a pastel painting on a unique surface ready for framing
Materials fee: $20 paid directly to instructor (includes selected pastel papers, alcohol, cups, wax paper, index cards, use of hard pastels, other finishing materials)
Each student should bring the following materials:
- Your own medium or soft dry pastels OR a beginner set (contact Lillian for recommendations)
- 3 of your own source photos (maximum 3 – 5 major shapes)
- Black and White copy of source photos
- Sketching pencil or charcoal pencil or stick
- Cheap or old paint brush (minimum size 1” flat)
- Pressboard or foam core (any standard size at least 20 x 30” and ¼” thick) to mount your artwork
