Roger Paul Phelps, III

Roger Paul Phelps, III grew up in Bristol, Virginia and completed his Bachelor of Music in Music Education at James Madison University and a Master of Music in Music Education with an emphasis in conducting from Florida State University. During this time, he was an avid brewer and a member of several home-brew clubs.

He began his passion for brewing by developing an appreciation for beer styles and processes by trying every local beer he could get his hands on, reading through style guidelines, and writing down what he tasted. Over the years he built a half-barrel brew system, kegorator, fermentation chamber, and many smaller components. He has worked with local home-brew clubs to help plan fundraising events, including “Pints for Paws” and “Brewed All Fur Them” where he organized the BJCP competition portion of the event.

Recently, he has pursued making beer his career. He is currently in the process of opening a brewery in the area. He hopes to create a unique space that serves three functions, providing; education, quality beer, and community engagement. The brewery will push the boundaries of the “traditional beer” offering beer that uses house-cultivated bacteria and yeast cultures, and locally sourced fruit and other ingredients to produce unique, mixed-fermentation beer.
