Woodturning uses the powers of the lathe to produce stunning bowls, lamps, pens, furniture legs, and even handles for tools. Woodturning can be credited for just about any rounded piece of wooden craft. It does not require physical strength and basic skills can be mastered quickly. The lathe itself a joy to operate, and the process of sculpting wood is a very satisfying experience.
Woodworkers Oliver Martin and Joe Payne are presenting a one-time-only, introductory class in woodturning at the Alliance. Oliver and Joe are officers of the Woodturners of Southwest Florida (woodturnersofswfl.org)and bring many years of experience in wood crafting to this demonstration. They will discuss the history, evolution, techniques, safety and tools for this craft and, if time permits, attendees may have the opportunity to work on the lathe to discover its ease of operation.
For those interested in pursuing this fascinating craft, further classes are offered at the woodturners teaching studio near downtown Fort Myers.
Ages 12-18 are welcome to attend this workshop, however they must have a parent registered as well.
