The Secret Weapons of Colored Pencil – Mastering Colored Pencil (Ages 16+)

It’s no surprise artists everywhere are taking up colored pencils – they may be the most versatile of all art media. No matter your style or level of experience, you will learn the secrets of quickly producing beautiful effects with simple tools. Through technical exercises, you’ll master quick methods for realistic textures and learn how to make changes and corrections. Individual guidance will help you develop your own choice of subject. Demonstrations and discussion will include color mixing for portraits and landscapes, simple solutions for backgrounds, effective composition and tips on presenting your work. Assorted papers and special tools will be provided, and for those who want to try before they buy, sets will be available to share in class.

Supply list:

• Colored Pencils – at least a 36-48 pencil set.
  • Any of these recommended brands: Blick Studio; Bruynzeel Design; Caran d’Ache Pablo or Luminance; Derwent Coloursoft, Lightfast, ProColor, Studio, or Artist; Faber-Castell Polychromos; Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor; Spectrum Noir ColourBlend; Soho Urban Artist; Prismacolor; Koh-i-Noor Polycolor, Tri-Tone, Progresso.
  • If you don’t have any, or want to try before you buy, several kinds of pencil sets will be available for use in class. (Watercolor/watersoluble pencils are very different, but can be discussed separately in class.)
• Kneaded eraser
• Graphite Drawing pencils: H or HB (#2) lead or whatever you prefer
• Drawing paper or board (9×12” or 11×14”)
  • Everyone receives a 9×12” pad of Stonehenge paper. Assorted other papers will also be provided.
  • You may also choose to bring your favorite drawing surface.
  • Recommended types: vellum Bristol; coldpress illustration, museum or mat board; drawing/pastel papers such as Canson Mi-Tientes or Mi-Teintes Touch, Art Spectrum Colorfix, UArt or Pastel Premier sanded paper. You may choose white or a color, to coordinate or contrast with your choice of reference for subject.  (see below)
• Pencil Sharpener (hand or electric)
• Clear (Scotch) tape and masking or artist’s tape
• Drawing board (to support 9×12” or larger)
• Optional supplies
  • Dried-out ballpoint pen
  • Any kind of erasers
  • X-Acto knife or similar small craft knife
  • Small, stiff bristle “scrubber” paintbrush
  • Colorless blender marker (such as Prismacolor brand or Finesse)
  • Sally or Saral graphite transfer paper
• Your choice of subject matter: photo references will be provided for class exercises and class project. For your own project, other references and props will be available or you may bring your own.  You may wish to have a full size outline drawing ready before class or bring a work in progress.
