Fine Art Acrylics

This Fine Art Acrylics class at the Alliance for the Arts was originally started by Gale Bennett, and was continued after his death by his former assistant Lucie Macherowski. After Lucie died, Marilyn Hedlund, their student of 25 years, continued to teach using the same principles. Students learn the importance of using complimentary colors and finding contrasts: light and dark, warm and cool colors, thick and thin lines, hard and soft edges, large and small shapes, etc.

Our goal is to loosen up and have fun painting, from beginner to the advanced painter. We encourage an impressionist style and the use of large brushes and strokes.

Abstract Landscapes, Plein Air

Abstract Landscapes, plain air, started by Marilyn Hedlund 2 years ago at the Alliance was an off-shoot of the Fine Art Acrylics Class which always had a waiting list. The same principles taught by early instructors Gale Bennett and Lucie Macherowski were applied, but the teaching varied to include principles of abstract painting. This class was especially welcomed during the COVID pandemic where people felt least at risk in the outdoors.
