A truism is that the only constant is change. Today Japan is rejuvenating the ancient sophisticated culture of the Geisha, while Europe is experiencing the rise of hyper-
nationalism not seen on the continent since the late 1930s. These events are not mirror images of the past but the consequences of new economic and political forces shaped by the past.
In contemporary advanced art (seen at a global level) this recapitulation of ideas and events is referred to as “Metamodernism”. The female artists selected for this lecture series express the tectonic cultural shifts that reflect the philosophical intentions of Metamodernism. Each artist brings the viewer’s attention to the drama of women in the world today: that emotional universe in which we live, regardless of gender.
The intention of this lecture is to open new horizons on contemporary art by female
artists of the 21 st century.
