Event details

Zan will teach you how to quickly sketch the essence of 60 Everglades animals over the course of 6 classes, employing the art elements of space, shape, line, color, shading and texture. We’ll start each sketch with pencil, then experiment with colored pencil, watercolor, or chalk. After practicing on ten animals each class, we’ll share and compare our results and talk about what worked, what we learned and what inspires us.

In each class we will follow this routine, allowing 10 MINUTES of sketching time for each of 10 ANIMALS.

  1. Trace square template on paper. (pencil)
  2. Consider SPACE, place key dots inside square, pay attention to negative areas
  3. Look for SHAPES, being sure they are proportional (pencil in light shapes, use eraser)
  4. Use LINES only, notice direction, follow edges, vary line quality (be confident with pencil lines)
  5. Add TEXTURE and DETAIL (Sharpie)
  6. Block in COLOR and SHADING, dark/medium/light (colored pencil, watercolor, chalk)

After sketching all 10 animals, we will spend 10-20 minutes sharing and comparing our results to inspire each other for the next class.
