Event details

Come move with us! Our ArtPlay classes are designed to engage students ages 8 – 25 with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the arts while focusing on identity development, self-awareness, self-esteem, social communication, and building positive coping skills. Classes hosted in partnership with Family Initiative.

Week 1 – We will begin with a series of “getting to know you” movement games, followed by a dance warm-up with dynamic movement, stretches and isolations. Then we will learn some jazz dance steps and start to create a dance together. We will end class with a reflection and a cool down, consisting of breathing exercises and a few yoga poses.

Week 2 – We will begin with our dance warm-up featuring dynamic movement, stretches and isolations. We will review the dance we started to create in Week 1 and add on to it, focusing on the choreographic elements of sequence and repetition. We will end class with a reflection and a cool down, consisting of breathing exercises and a few yoga poses.

Week 3 – We will begin with our dance warm-up featuring dynamic movement, stretches and isolations. We will review our dance sequence and make revisions. We will discuss the relationship between music and choreography and consider adding music to our dance. We will end class with a reflection and a cool down, consisting of breathing exercises and a few yoga poses.

Week 4 – We will begin with our dance warm-up featuring dynamic movement, stretches and isolations. We will discuss formation and look at a few examples. We will determine how many formations will fit our choreographed dance and start to add them into the choreography. We will end class with a reflection and a cool down, consisting of breathing exercises and a few yoga poses.

Week 5 We will begin with our dance warm-up featuring dynamic movement, stretches and isolations. We will rehearse our dance piece and prepare for an informal performance. After the performance we will reflect on the process of creating a dance that focused on the choreographic elements of sequence, repetition, music and formation. We will end our month together with a moment of gratitude and our ritual cool down of breathing exercises and yoga poses.
