The mission of Julia’s Arts is: to create an open flow of creative ideas between that of the artists’ work and the viewer, and to allow the viewer to participate in a constructive dialogue about the work and their own perception of it. Julia’s Arts opened in November of 2005, with approximately five (5) artists represented. Now, in 2007, Julia’s Arts represents over 70 local artists. The works exhibited at Julia’s Arts range from original paintings to hand-crafted jewelry and from blown glass creations to ceramic sculpture. Julia’s Arts has been a member of the Pine Island Art Gallery Association since opening in 2005 and thus participates actively in the Art Nights on Pine Island. Coming soon! Florida's Seminole Indians:

A Photographic Journey with the White Medicine Man

thewhitemedicineman

W. Stanley Hanson, known as the “White Medicine Man” of the Seminole Indians, was born on November 27, 1883, in Key West, Florida. When still an infant in his mother’s arms, he and his family moved to Fort Myers, then a primitive little village of only a few hundred inhabitants. Hanson’s father, Dr. William Hanson, and his mother, Julia Allen Hanson, were descended from old and established lines of English ancestry. Dr. Hanson, a graduate of Edinburgh, was one of the first practicing physicians in this area. His patients included the elderly, Tom Edison and occasional Seminole Indians, with whom his son made acquaintance. Stanley’s playmates included the children of the Seminole Indian patients and later he would accompany his father into the wilds of the Everglades to provide medical care to the Indians. As a young man he knew them all by name, knew their language, understood them and loved them.

Read more about the "White Medicine Man" here, and see an astounding and culturally rich collection of Seminole Indian artifacts at the Alliance for the Arts this winter. The show opens on January 18th with a special reception from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and will be on display through February 29th.

Winter 2007/2008 Classes and Workshops

Teacher Spotlight: Leo Johnson

Fenning by Leo Johnson

Leo Johnson is an accomplished artist, lecturer and teacher with many national awards and international exhibitions to his credit. On the left is an example of his work ("Fenning"). Leo is a third generation Cuban-Sicilian who studied painting in San Miguel, Mexico at a school founded by the great Mexican muralists Diego Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros. About his paintings Leo says: “I try to reflect the human spirit - its agonies, joys, exuberance - and peaks and valleys of everyday life. Also included are the fleeting moments which appear to us once in a lifetime and are gone. Throughout the history of art, mankind has been the motivator, the inspirer, and the force that protects and propels civilization into the future.”
Join Leo in his latest adult painting class, 20th Century Painting, on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. He also teachers Modern Painting for ages 12 – 16 with his wife, Krista, on Thursdays from 4:00 – 6:00 pm.

A simple way to support local arts

licenseplate

When you renew your license plate registration this year, consider supporting the arts. $20.00 from each purchase of a “State of the Arts” plate in Lee County directly benefits the Alliance for the Arts which in turn uses the funding to support the arts in Lee County. You can also buy the arts plate at any time by simply visiting the local tag office. An arts plate costs $32.00 plus handling fees. A renewal form is available at the Alliance.
